How effective are language learning apps?

Language learning apps have become a huge trend. Think about Duolingo, Babbel or Mondly. These apps all make sure that language learning is fun, accessible and easy, but how effective are they in truly helping you speak the language?

In this blog, we’ll dive deep into the differences between the most popular language learning apps and learning platforms like coLanguage. Curious to find out what coLanguage has more to offer than Duolingo? Let’s unpack this!

Duolingo

Duolingo is one of the most popular language learning apps in the world, and with good reason. It's free, user-friendly, and designed like a game. Its bite-sized lessons help millions of users build basic vocabulary and grammar skills while staying motivated through streaks, levels, and quirky sentences.

Duolingo uses a learning method, encouraging users to discover patterns rather than memorizing rules. Combined with interactive stories, audio exercises, and speech practice, it offers a well-rounded approach to basic language exposure.

For beginners who want to casually explore a language, it’s a great start. But while Duolingo is engaging, its biggest strength is also its limitation. Gamified repetition and isolated phrases can only take you so far. You may learn how to translate a sentence or recognize a word, but:

  • You won’t hold a real conversation
  • You don’t get feedback from a real person
  • You don’t develop fluency or confidence in real-life settings
  • There’s no personalized learning plan tailored to your goals.
  • It’s not built for people preparing for language exams or professional use.

That’s where coLanguage comes in. Instead of practicing random phrases alone, you’ll speak with real teachers in real conversations, learning grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and cultural context in a meaningful way. With structured modules, revision materials, and flexible scheduling, coLanguage offers what apps like Duolingo can’t: progress that sticks and a human connection that motivates.

Babbel

Babbel is often praised for its structured learning experience. With short lessons, grammar tips, interactive exercises and voice recognition, it feels like a serious step up from the gamified style of Duolingo. It’s designed for busy people: 15 minutes a day is enough to build a steady habit.

Plus, its lessons align with the CEFR levels, and you even get a certificate when you complete one. Babbel gives you access to podcasts, cultural content, stories and a smart review system that prompts you to revise words exactly when you're likely to forget them.

But here's the catch: it’s still an app. Despite all the progress you’re making in isolation. No real interaction, no unpredictable situations, and no real conversation. The voice recognition helps a bit with pronunciation, but it’s not the same as speaking with a real human being.

That’s where coLanguage comes in. Instead of studying on autopilot, you’ll practice real dialogues with experienced teachers who correct your mistakes, answer your questions, and guide you toward your personal goals. You’ll also learn how to actually use grammar and vocabulary in context, not just recognize it in a quiz.

Busuu

Busuu combines structured CEFR-aligned lessons with peer feedback. After every few lessons, you’re invited to write or say something in your target language, which is then reviewed by other users, often native speakers, who give you feedback on grammar, word choice, and pronunciation.

You can learn at your own pace, and choose which topics are relevant to you. Plus, their intelligent review system helps you repeat vocabulary right when you're likely to forget it, helping you build long-term memory.

But for all its clever features, Busuu stops just before the real thing: speaking in spontaneous, natural conversation. You don’t practice fluency in real time, and the feedback comes from fellow learners or volunteers, not trained teachers. There's no guarantee of consistent guidance, correction, or progress tracking.

While Busuu gives you input and peer review, coLanguage gives you output in real conversations with qualified teachers. You don’t just repeat sentences, you actively practice how to think, speak, and interact in the language. Your learning is guided, goal-oriented, and adapted based on your strengths and weaknesses. And unlike Busuu’s user feedback, your coLanguage teacher is an expert, not a stranger online.

Mondly

Mondly by Pearson enters the language learning scene with 41 languages, gamified progress tracking, and advanced tech like augmented reality and chatbots. You get phrasebooks with real-life expressions, daily challenges, weekly quizzes, and a virtual conversation partner powered by speech recognition.

Mondly simulates conversation, it doesn’t teach you how to hold one. You speak to a chatbot, not a human. There’s no unpredictable interaction, no spontaneous feedback, no personalized guidance when you make a mistake. You’re rehearsing, not communicating. And when the goal is to feel confident in real-world situations, simulated practice has its limits.

At coLanguage, you don’t just memorize and repeat. You actually engage in live conversations with professional teachers. You build sentences from scratch, express yourself freely, and get immediate, tailored feedback, things that no AI chatbot can match. Add to that a structured CEFR-based curriculum, short revision tools, and a teacher who tracks your goals, and your path to fluency becomes much more personal and practical.

Memrise

Memrise prides itself on science-backed learning, using cognitive psychology and memory techniques to accelerate your progress. The platform combines three pillars: learning practical vocabulary and grammar, immersing yourself in native-level videos tailored to your level, and practicing communication without fear of judgment.

Memrise helps you hear the language as it’s actually spoken, not textbook-perfect but street-level fluent. But while Memrise is excellent at helping you absorb and recognize real-world speech, it falls short when it comes to real interaction. You don’t get meaningful corrections or tailored feedback, because you’re not talking to a real person.

At coLanguage, we combine structured learning and live conversation, guided by certified language teachers who track your progress, correct your mistakes, and push you to express yourself. At coLanguage, you don’t just train your brain, you train your pronunciation, your confidence, and your fluency in real-life conversations. All of it aligned with CEFR levels and flexible formats that fit your routine.

The limitations of language learning apps

Language learning apps are a great starting point, they’re accessible, fun, and easy to use. But for anyone serious about truly mastering a language, they often fall short. Why?

Most apps are built around gamified repetition and vocabulary drills. While this keeps things entertaining for a while, it rarely leads to real progress in speaking, listening, or understanding cultural context. They lack the depth, structure, and human connection needed for long-term success.

Some common limitations include:

  • No real speaking practice: Apps don’t offer live interaction, so you’re not actually learning to communicate with real native people.
  • Poor pronunciation training: You often speak to a robot, not a person who can correct you.
  • No personal guidance: There’s  professional teacher who adjusts the material to your needs or gives you professional feedback.
  • No real immersion or cultural context: You learn phrases, but not how to use them naturally in conversation.
  • Limited motivation: Many users stop using the app after a few weeks due to lack of progress, challenge or self-discipline.
  • Limited and impersonal content: Many apps aren’t tailored to your needs.
  • No preparation for official certificates: If you're learning for work, study, or migration, apps won't be enough to prepare you for exams like DELE or Goethe.
  • No CEFR-based curriculum: Few apps follow an officially recognized structure like the CEFR (A1–C2), making it hard to track real progress.

Apps can be a helpful supplement, but they’re not a replacement for structured lessons, personalized feedback, and real conversation. That's where platforms like coLanguage make the difference.

What are apps still useful for?

While apps have their limitations, they can still play a valuable supporting role in your language journey. They're easy to use, accessible anywhere, and offer short, gamified lessons that help you stay engaged.

Apps are especially useful for:

  • Reviewing vocabulary on the go
  • Getting a fun first taste of a new language
  • Building a daily habit through bite-sized practice
  • Supporting your progress between real conversation lessons

They're great for beginners who want to explore a language, or for quick practice alongside structured courses like those at coLanguage.

What does coLanguage that apps don't?

Our approach is designed to keep you engaged, motivated, and on track. This way you can reach fluency without feeling overwhelmed. Here's how we do it:

  • Personalized guidance from experienced teachers
    • Clear and structured course plan following official language guidelines
    • Practical conversation classes
    • Flexibility in lesson format and timing
    • Short supportive revision materials for reinforcement

We make sure you’re not only learning the language but also ready to prove your skills with a recognized certificate. Whether you're aiming for the DELE, SIELE, or another certification, we ensure you have the tools to succeed.

We can conclude that language learning is ultimately about human connection, expressing yourself, understanding others, and building real conversations.

Apps can be a fun and accessible starting point, but if you're serious about making real progress, coLanguage offers the structure, guidance, and personal interaction you need to grow.

I was looking for a middle-aged teacher, I found Emmanuel and I'm very happy about it. His lessons are very effective and tailored precisely to my needs. He also selects the appropriate texts and teaching materials for my topics. Really great. The lessons are a lot of fun. I can highly recommend Emmanuel.
