Understanding Goethe Levels (A1–C2)
Aligned with the CEFR, the Goethe-Zertifikat exams run from A1 to C2. Most students aim for:
- A1 – Use simple everyday expressions
- A2 – Engage in basic conversations and daily needs
- B1 – Manage everyday situations; write brief, clear texts
- B2 – Understand detailed content; speak fluently in varied settings
- C1 – Use German naturally in professional/academic contexts
- C2 – Communicate with native-like precision and nuance
Pick your ideal level
Choose based on:
- Your current German proficiency (via placement test)

Balance all four skills—reading, writing, listening, and speaking—for a well-rounded performance.
Take a full mock exam to assess if the level matches your comfort: too easy or too hard means adjust accordingly.
